There are many dating websites that are open to everyone. These websites allow anyone to contact anyone else and communicate with people with which they have zero in common. These websites are interesting, but a bit of a dead end if you want to meet someone interesting in your age range. When your goal is to find someone that’s right for you, you want a website used by people with similar interests at a similar stage of their life.

That’s why there are websites that are ideal for members of a specific group or niche. Some sites specialize in these groups, only allowing members to join if they fit the right criteria. Others are designed to help people find someone in their own age group with the same interests and ideals in life.

Using Dating Websites Over 40

Singles over 40 are very different from singles in their thirties or younger. By 40, many single men and women have either been married or enjoyed very long term relationships. They may have had kids or are settled into a career. They are at a very different place in life than those in their 20’s and 30’s.

It may be in your best interests to choose a website that has millions of members, and focus your search from there using eligibility criteria. It may also be preferable to join a specialized niche dating site and, while there may not be as many members, those that you do find will be serious about finding love within your age range.

    I’ve found that the more focused a site is in its targeting of members, the simpler it is to find possible matches. Especially if there are checks in place to be sure that those signing up are real people who are interested in finding someone for an actual relationship, and not simply there to browse around.

    I think this is definitely why it is better to go with a site that charges a membership fee, as it filters out those who are simply there for a browse around! Thanks for the info.

    Your are right. Certain sites are better set up for the over 40 dating scene, but these often have fewer people in their membership database.

    Some of the more well known websites seem to have more members to choose from… you just need to know how to refine your search to only see the members that you think will suit you.

    I find that it is sometimes better to stick with the well known dating sites rather than the ones that are focused only on the over 40 dating scene, as a large percentage of those websites have large advertising budgets which allow them to advertise via radio, tv and other media. This in turn means a much larger member base to choose from

      Yes, Elizabeth. Great point about the sites that charge for membership. It may be convenient to be able to create a free profile to test out a site and browse the available members, but how many other people have created profiles, and then never committed to becoming a paid member. These profiles then sit there with noone at the other end to respond.

      That’s why the matchmaking sites are so great. They charge a little more than standard online mature dating sites, but they provide so much more, including a verification process. And given that people need to make an investment to be on the site, they are far more likely to be active to get their monies worth.

    Charging to be a member sounds like a good idea to me because it also weeds out the people who are just out there maybe to stalk someone, I know that probably never happens but as a single woman you can never be to careful. So I personally will sign up for the one that is in my age range and that they have to pay for because I don’t think a stalker is going to pay for his information. This has been very informative though because I never knew about the ones that pair you up by niche, that would be interesting to say the least. Thank you for the work you obviously put into this article I appreciate the help all I can get.

    How do you get set up on an over forty web site when you aren’t over forty? I am in my early thirties but I would like a more mature man to start a relationship with so I would prefer to get a membership on the forty and older web sites. Is that possible? If so could you please post another comment explaining how to do this or if it is even something I need to worry about?

    Hi Christin,

    Many mature dating sites allow for this very situation, with most accepting applications from women in a lower age bracket than the men. One such site is Mature Dating Only (http://www.maturesinglesonline.com/visit/mature-dating-only/) who are more than happy to give a membership to a woman of 30+

    Other than that, I don’t think you are at any disadvantage to signup for one of the more popular generic sites such as eHarmony (http://www.maturesinglesonline.com/visit/eharmony/) and simply search for males in the age bracket you seek.

    I noticed a comment from Christin about wanting to sign up on the over forty dating web site because she is looking for an older man and you responded that most dating sites don’t object to younger women submitting application for just this situation. Is it the same answer for men looking for a more mature woman? I am tired of getting matched up with these young ladies that are as sweet and nice as they can be but they couldn’t take care of a house hold or cook to save their lives. I am a widower and I have two small children to raise so obviously I need someone to help in that area as well as be a companion for me.

    In your case it may be better for you to signup to a service such as eHarmony or Mature Dating Only (see the links above your comment) which are both reasonably inclusive, and simply filter your prospective matches by the age range you are looking for.

    Another site you may want to try if you have kids and are in the UK is http://www.maturesinglesonline.com/visit/dating-for-parents/ which is setup specifically for people in your situation.

    I am sure glad that they have an over forty dating site now because going out and trying to meet someone new is hard to do. I don’t want to go to bars or clubs etc. to try to find someone and there aren’t a whole lot of men at places that I go shopping and such so to me this is one of those luxuries that I can look for a date in the comfort of my own home. It will help weed out the unwanted attention too. Thank you for letting us know that this is out there now I appreciate it very much, I’m tired of the dating scene but I’m tired of being alone as well.

    This was a great blog, I have been married before and it has taken me a long time to decide that I was even ready to date again, this definitely sounds like a good way to do it when you have been out of the dating scene for so long. You mentioned people of all ages just wanting to chat on these sites, why don’t they use FaceBook for that, isn’t that what it’s for?

    I have been on dating sites since before there were so many competing sites. My experience with dating sites goes back to the late 1990′s when there was only one or two popular sites. I have experienced the evolution and saturation of dating web sites and I have noticed that the most commercialized sites have their draw backs as the riff raft infiltrate it and decrease the quality. I prefer the smaller, niche dating sites because you get less quantity and better quality.

      It certainly is true about the riff-raff on larger sites. I was investigating an Australian dating site the other day and noticed that over 60% of it’s web traffic came from Nigeria…! Makes you wonder just how many legitimate profiles there are on some of the larger sites. That’s why I think it is so important to sign up to the paid niche dating sites for those 40-50+ as it weeds out nearly all the nasties who can’t be bothered paying
