Senior Dating Do’s And Don’ts

It doesn’t matter how much experience you have in relationships – there’s always more to be learned. Dating as a senior has its own unique rules, so you need to make sure you adhere to these rules if you hope to create a successful relationship. For those seniors looking to start dating again, here are several dating rules you should follow:
Do’s
- Take Things Slow – Your goal is to find someone that you will truly care about. Try to speed things up and you’ll push them away or get into a relationship with someone that isn’t right for you.
- Enjoy Activities Together – You’re looking for your future partner in crime, and while it would be nice to have someone whose company you enjoy even while sitting on the couch all afternoon, you want to find someone you can share a lot of great experiences with.
- Take Care of Your Health – When it comes to senior dating, you want your potential partner to know that you are going to be as healthy and active as possible, so that he/she can see a bright future with you.
- Flirt! - You’re dating, after all, and dating is not just about finding someone you care about – it’s about having a little fun. Flirting shows that you’re still young at heart and helps you make every date more exciting.
- Be Optimistic – You should be positive both in conversations with a potential partner and in your expectations of the future. No one wants to date someone filled with negative thoughts about themselves or the future of the relationship. Unless you remain positive, you’re going to scare away potential mates.
Don’ts
- Grouchiness – You are trying to attract a partner and create romance just as you would when you were younger. Seniors have experienced so much of life that it’s easy to be cynical about the world, but try to open up and enjoy everything you experience. Show your potential partner why you’re such a catch.
- Neediness – Neediness is a classic mistake in younger men and women. Treat your dates like they are just that – dates. They’re not marriages, and they’re not yet relationships. Worry about needing the other person when you’ve had a great time with them on several dates.
- Nostalgia – You should talk about the fun things you did in your past and bond over shared experiences, but you shouldn’t talk about your past as though you’re still living in it. Potential partners want to see that you’re open to the great things you can do together in the future.
Senior dating is different from so called “traditional dating” because you have years of life experience that already shaped who you are and how you act around others. But dating is still dating, and it’s important that you treat each date with the knowledge that you still have many years ahead of you, and you’re looking to meet someone special to share them with.
